Really, one of the central questions…is, Where is the next Fred Rogers? That should be Fred’s legacy—to inspire a new generation of young people to continue the work that he had done.
dr. milton chen, educational media expert

today, the fred rogers center builds upon Fred’s legacy. In 2002, Dr. Milton Chen, executive director of The George Lucas Educational Foundation, and Ellen Galinsky, president of Families and Work Institute, wrote vision papers reflecting on how the Center could best carry on the incredible legacy of Fred Rogers as an advocate, communicator, and innovator.

The mission of the Fred Rogers Center is to advance the fields of early learning and children’s media by acting as a catalyst for communication, collaboration, and creative change. As a national and international resource for addressing emerging issues affecting children from birth to age 5, the work of the Fred Rogers Center resonates with Fred’s own belief in the positive potential of media for supporting social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.

The Fred M. Rogers Center building project was supported by funding from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, matched by private gifts and grants. Through a design competition supported by The Heinz Endowments, Saint Vincent College selected Forty Eighty Architecture, Pittsburgh, to design the building that houses the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media, The Conference Center at Saint Vincent College, and the Foster and Muriel McCarl Coverlet Collection. The building has earned LEED Gold Certification, making it a leader in energy and environmental design. The site offers a visual gateway to the Saint Vincent Basilica, the campus of Saint Vincent College, and the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve. Fred was a friend of Winnie Palmer and her husband, Arnold Palmer.

As an educational institution defined by its Benedictine heritage and its liberal arts and sciences tradition, Saint Vincent College provides a distinctively compatible setting for understanding and furthering Fred Rogers’ contributions to early learning and children’s media.… The Rogers Center will guide current and future generations of educators, parents, media professionals, policymakers, and others in approaching their work on behalf of children and families in the spirit of Fred’s characteristic compassion and empathy.
